Fields and Frames 2- Second Workshop

No comments:

During this lesson we had a re-cap on what we did in the last lesson and expanded cinema. We also discussed the ways in which we could approach Fields and Frames, looking at the brief and analysing what each part means. We also looked at the positives of using film, for example being able to experiment and using film allows for a finished product once it has been made, however when shooting something all the elements have to be taken into consideration such as pre- production and post-production, suggesting using film allows for something to be somewhat 'Ready-made' once the process of using film has finished. We were also given advice on using our time wisely and staying on top of our workload, otherwise things can become difficult. Overall I feel Vicky gave some very helpful pointers on how we should go about working on our projects.

During the second part of the lesson we were separated into groups and looked into 4 key words that we should consider playing with when thinking about our own Fields and Frames project. These were 'Reflexivity', 'Duration', 'Perspective' and 'The Frame'.

Me, Nick, Sahir and Tori researched into 'The Frame' and looked at example work such as Kurt Kren’s 48 Faces from the Szondi’ and Richard Serra's ‘Hand Catching Lead’, both of which were framed differently. Kurt Kren's piece was framed so that the faces took up most of the screen, making for an interesting visual experience. Richard Serra's piece was framed in away that positions the hand as the main object, emphasising its simplistic movement. The meaning of 'The Frame' was defined by our group as "The frame- presentation of the image/placement of a subject bounded to an area, confined to a 'frame'". We also found an interesting quote that stated 'Size and volume win the frame speak as much as dialogue' meaning that the frame can tell the story better than the characters and dialogue through what you're viewing.

My notes taken from the other groups' research were as follows:

Reflexivity:

.Meaning Cause and Effect
.Creation of film itself
.GoGoGo- Marie Menken (Shutter, Shadow and Mirror)

Man with a movie Camera- Splitscreen

Duration

-       Duration can be manipulated through cuts, slow/fast motion
-       Means for narrative films to conform to a story-
-       Set period of time
-       Measure of Continuance
-       Berlin Horse

-       Relationship between film time + real time

Perspective

-       How a viewer interprets what they see
-       Visual perception
-       Different perspectives- different camera positions

-       Tony hill- perspective film maker

We were then put into groups. My group consisted of me. Nick, Sahir, Laura and Dami.  Me and Nick acted in a piece that had to be a simple example of a movement called 'Tableau Vivant', which includes freezing still in a position and then un-freezing your position and continuing your movement. Our piece had to also incorporate our word, ours being 'The Frame'. Laura was the camera person who worked with making the framing interesting and experimental. After we did this task we presented our work and was shown how to work a film projector.
