During our lesson with Rosie, we were introduced to the new unit and what we will be doing. We were then shown a variation of films such as:
'La Jetée' by Chris Marker was very interesting due to the fact that it was mostly made up of still photo's. Personally, I had never seen a film made this way, so it fascinated me. The use of images and sound was an interesting method of film making that I had never thought about. The film also got me thinking about memories, and the fragility of them. It also made me think about the ways in which they can be preserved. The theme of time travel in the film links in with this, as it is looking at the man's past and future.
We also watched films such as 'Blue' by Derek Jarmans. The film itself consists of only a voice over and a bright blue colour filling the screen. This was used because at the time Derek Jarman's was losing his vision due to AIDS. Rosie stated that it was particularly interesting as Derek Jarman's was known for his visually pleasing films, so when this film was originally shown, it received mixed reviews and left fans of his work saddened because they may've not got the concept behind it.
